North Franklin Educational Center New Vision Program
Government and Law

The New Vision: Legal/Law Program offering will develop competencies applicable to many careers in the field of law.  In this program, students will study the American legal system in depth, its roots in natural and common law, the purposes/values it serves and the roles of the judiciary, legislative and private parties.  The academic curriculum is combined with clinical experience to provide students with a rich and rewarding learning opportunity.

Qualifications:
Potential Students

  • Senior from a component high school

  • Average of 85% or higher

  • Completion of application form and admission essay, two teacher references and a guidance counselor reference

  • Satisfy graduation requirements

  • Demonstrate an interest and desire to enter a career in the legal field

  • Plan to attend a college or pursue other postsecondary education

  • Exhibit maturity, responsibility and the ability to work both independently and in teams

Proposed Credit:
Academic

  • English 12 - 1 credit

  • Economics - 1/2 credit

  • Participation in Government - 1/2 credit

  • Political Science - 1 credit

Possible Bridge Program

Objectives of Program

  • Students are introduced to the skills and responsibilities associated within this field.  During the course of the year, the students will:

  • Learn fundamental concepts and techniques used by attorneys and courts in analyzing cases, interpreting statues and determining disputes.

  • Study jurisdictional authority and how it is applied at the local, county, state and federal level.

  • Analyze fact situations in depth and be able to organize and argue points-of-view both verbally and in writing.

  • Interact with guest lecturers from federal and state law enforcement agencies, judges and lawyers.

  • Research and argue landmark and current legal issues in first and appellate level court situations.
